ZAP took 51% of Jonway Auto’s stock

The American automotive company, ZAP, recently completed its purchase of Zhejiang’s Jonway Auto. The merger was announced by ZAP’s CEO Steve Schneider at the Chengdu Auto Forum in late 2010 and is the first instance of a Chinese automotive company being majority owned by an American company. Although Jonway is a small company, they are prepared for the big time – they have achieved ISO 9000 certification and have over 3.6 million square feet of factory space.

ZAP took 51% of Jonway Auto’s stock which will see Jonway Auto renamed ZAP Jonway. Jonway are aiming for sales of 10,000 units in 2011, sales hit 7000 units in 2010 – these seem like small numbers but in contrast to 2009 sales when Jonway sold just 4000 vehicles. As a newly minted local automaker, Jonway is finding it hard to hit the big time in a highly competitive market, but by working with ZAP they will be able to develop new energy vehicles such as an electric variant of the A380 SUV which they are hoping to sell to taxi fleets.

Jonway Auto also managed to make their A380 vehicle one of the official fleet cars at the American Pavillion at last years World Expo in Shanghai.
