First models of Landwind, Chinese offroad cars, came to Europe on July 7th 2005. Dutch Peter Bijvelds got the only right to sell Chinese cars in 27 European countries. His company did some unknown modification in being introduced cars, so they can fit strict European emission standards. The company Landwind Poland (in Mogilno) will distribute cars in Poland.

There are three engines in importer’s offer: 2.0 (114 bhp), 2.4 (125 bhp) and 2.8 TD (92 bhp). Petrol engines are old Mitsubishi construction. In the beginning of 90’s they were assembled in MPVs destined for European market. 2.8 litres Turbodiesel (92 bhp) comes from Isuzu. Through few years (the end of 80’s and begging of 90’s) the offroad model Trooper was equipped with it, but it was replaced by stronger and more modern 3.0 engine very fast. The car has 5-speed manual transmission. As it is in offroad models, it is equipped with added front wheel drive and reducer. But to fully use its opportunities, front wheel hubs has to be manually blocked.

Landwind’s body reminds Opel Frontera and Isuzu Rodeo – models, which were built as a result of GM and Isuzu cooperation (since 1971). The car is a little bit bigger, than - not being produced any more – twins: length 4,745 mm (+92mm), width 1,800 mm, height 1,750 mm. Wheelbase is 2,760 mm (+58 mm). Standard equipment covers: air conditioning with climate control (with Chinese bushes), radio with CD, electric windows and driving mirrors, rear park sensors and central locking with remote. As additional equipment there can be: electric sunroof, CD changer (6 CDs) and metallic body colour.

Safety is the weakest side of Chinese offroad, and very poor results of crash test provided by German organization ADAC confirms this disadvantage. Results were the worst in 20 years of ADAC’s history. During front impact with the speed 64 km/h front passenger cab was completely destroyed, and standard air bag didn’t guarantee any safety during test. According to ADAC, the driver has nearly no chances to survive – the result was only 1 point on 16 possible to get. Side impact’s result was a little better – with the speed of 50 km/h it got 12 points on 16 possible. For child protection the car got 39 points on 49 possible. Original Frontera got in EuroNCAP in 2002 three stars on five possible (EuroNCAP haven’t tested Landwind yet).

Landwind Europe sold 100 cars in Holland, before poor crash tests’ results were published. After that, German Opel’s dealer, who pioneered Chinese car into their offer, didn’t find any buyer. As a response to lots of attacks about car’s quality, Landwind was modernized (being produced since 2003) and as a new version named X-Pedition was presented at Paris auto show in 2006. In the beginning the car will be offered in France. As Elisabeth Young, president of Asie Auto company (Landwind’s French distributor), ensured, by the end of the year the car will get official certification, which will be possible because of lots of modification, made last time. Main importer - Peter Bijvelds plans to replace old engine from Isuzu (2.8 litres of capacity) by the new 2.5 litres engine, which fits Euro 4 emission standard. Italian company VM Motori will produce this engine. Growing demand for SUV cars caused, that MG Rover dealers from France, Spain and Portugal want to distribute the car. Landwind Europe is also looking for dealers in Italy.
